The need
Why this campaign exists
When we walked into MPPS Kothapally in 2016, there were four books in the building. Three of them were textbooks and one was a 1994 telephone directory.
Nine years later that school has 840 titles, a lockable almirah, a colour-coded shelving system the Class 5 children maintain themselves, and a reading hour every Saturday morning that eleven parents attend. The share of children there who can read a Class-2 paragraph has gone from one in five to nearly two in three.
We want to do that nineteen more times before June. Each library costs between ₹38,000 and ₹72,000 depending on the size of the school — books graded to reading level, a steel almirah that survives the monsoon, and a term of training for the teacher who will run it.
₹2,500 stocks a shelf of fifty books. ₹12,000 furnishes a corner. ₹50,000 opens a library. Every rupee is receipted under Section 80G, and every school we open a library in is listed publicly on this site with its UDISE code.

Three libraries opened in Suryapet this week
MPUPS Mallareddygudem, MPPS Ravipahad and KGBV Huzurnagar each received their almirah and the first 300 titles on Tuesday. The Class 6 girls at Huzurnagar had the entire collection catalogued by Thursday evening — faster than our own team manages.
Halfway there — and a note on what books we buy
We crossed ₹6,00,000 last Friday. A few donors have asked why we buy Pratham Books, NBT and Eklavya titles rather than the cheaper bulk sets. The short answer: the cheap sets are abridged classics in English at a Class 7 reading level, and our children are at Class 2. A book a child cannot read is not a cheaper book, it is a wasted one.
