Handing a school a carton of books changes nothing. We have watched cartons sit unopened for two years because nobody was responsible for them and nobody had time to run a reading hour.
So Books for Every Child is a system, not a donation. Each site gets an age-graded collection of 400–1,200 titles chosen against ASER reading levels, a lockable steel almirah, a colour-coded shelving scheme the children themselves maintain, one teacher trained as a librarian, and a protected 45-minute reading period every week that the headmaster signs off on.
Twice a year we run an ASER-style oral reading assessment on a sample of Classes 3 to 5. The number we care about is the share of children who can read a Class-2 level paragraph. Across our adopted schools that figure moved from 31% in 2021 to 58% in 2025.
Village volunteers, mostly mothers and retired teachers, run the Saturday reading circles. They are the reason the libraries stay open when our staff are not in the district.
