Inspiration through literacy
In Telugu, akshara means letter and spoorthi means inspiration. Akshara Spoorthi Foundation is a public charitable trust working with government schools in rural Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, so that every child has books, a working library and a reason to stay in school.

The library that opens on Sunday
At Ankapur the school library is open to the whole village on Sunday mornings. It was not our idea, and the attendance register is the best thing we have read all year.

Headmasters, parents, donors and volunteers
I have had three organisations bring books to this school. Two of them came once, took photographs, and I never saw them again. These people came back in the second month to ask whether the children were actually reading, and they did not like my answer. That is when I decided to work with them.
