The academic year opens in the second week of June. In a lot of our schools, the government textbook consignment arrives in August and the free uniform in September.
For the child of an agricultural labourer, those ten weeks are the ones in which she decides whether school is a place where she belongs. A bag of her own on day one is not a small thing.
A kit is ₹640: a canvas bag, four notebooks, a slate, a geometry box, pencils, a colour set and a water bottle. We buy through a Warangal supplier who employs eleven women from a self-help group, and we distribute at the school, in front of the headmaster, against a signed acknowledgement.

Assembly has started in Warangal. The bags are stitched by an eleven-woman self-help group in Hasanparthy who have supplied us since 2022. First delivery goes to the four Warangal schools in the week the academic year opens.
